Video Production Brief Template for Marketing Teams
A video production brief explains what a viewer should understand or do after watching, then makes the format, footage and review process clear enough for production to begin.
Turn this into my briefStart with the outcome.
A film built for a specific viewing context—rather than a beautiful asset with no clear job once it is published.
What to include in the brief.
- 01Viewer and context: where the video appears and how much attention it has
- 02Message and action: what the viewer should understand, feel or do
- 03Format: duration, aspect ratios, captions and channel requirements
- 04Footage and assets: what exists, what needs production and what is licensed
- 05Deliverables: hero film, cutdowns, social edits, stills or alternate versions
- 06Production constraints: budget, shoot window, approvers and final deadline
A worked example.
We need a 30-second paid-social film for a new ergonomic desk chair. Viewers are remote workers encountering us for the first time on Instagram. The film should show the chair’s adjustment system in use and lead to a product-page visit. We have a half-day product shoot planned, founder talking points and 3D renders. We need 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1 edits, captions and two cutdowns before our November sale campaign.
